Meiringen Meiringen is the starting point to visit different attractions such as the resort of Hasliberg for sports activities like hiking, biking and skiing, the Reichenbach Falls with its historic cable car, the Aare Gorge and also the Rosenlaui Gorge with the wild romantic Rosenlaui Valley through which the Rosenlaui Creek is flowing. Meiringen and the Reichenbach Falls are well known by all fans of Sherlock Holmes, the famous detective in the novels by Arthur Conan Doyle. There is a small museum with a replica of the living room of Sherlock Holmes at Baker Street 221B. Opening hours: April 14-24, 2022 | daily 1:30 until 5:00 pm / May 01 until October 31, 2022 | daily 1:30 until 6:00 pm . And of course there is that fine and sweet dessert: The Meringue. Rumour has it, that this was invented here by the Italian confectioner Gasparini around 1600. Reichenbach Falls The audacious engineers followed the thundering waters of the Reichenbach Falls when they were laying the tracks for the goods railway in 1899. Eyeball to eyeball with the raging stream and the mighty 120-metre-high Reichenbach Falls, this heritage railway, with its 24-seater wooden carriage, an accurate reproduction of the original, climbs ever upwards. Near the summit station, three viewing terraces offer a breathtaking view of the waterfall and the Haslital. This excursion is pretty much a must for Sherlock Holmes fans. It was here that the famous detective challenged his arch-enemy Professor Moriarty to a fight - their hand-to-hand battle ended with them tumbling into the depths of precisely this waterfall! Aare Gorge The Aare Gorge is a 1'400 m long and 200 m deep natural wonder. It takes around 45 minutes to walk through the imposing gorge (one way) - an easy and safe walk along walkways and through tunnels. With its constant cool temperature, the Aare Gorge is naturally refreshing - making it an ideal destination for a beautiful sunny hot summer day. When it rains, the gorge is very impressive with its mystical atmosphere and, at parts, large stretches of water. The gorge is an indirect product of glaciation; 10'000 years ago, just as the Ice Age was coming to an end, torrential runoff water from melting glaciers eroded a deep, narrow chasm through the limestone barrier. This passage is bordered by sheer cliffs up to 180 m high on either side. The gorge varies in width from some 30 metres at its widest to just 1 metre at its narrowest. |
