To stand high above Europe's largest waterfall, feeling the roar and vibration of the water over one's entire body, a spectacular example of the nature's power - this can be experienced at the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen. Due to tectonic shifts during the last Ice Age, the Rhine Falls came into being at the transition point where hard chalk did meet soft gravel, about 15'000 years ago. Over a breadth of 150 meters, the waters rush down 23 meters, at an average flow rate in summer time of 600 m³ per second. In the middle of this natural spectacle of the water falls, stands a mighty rock which has withstood the elements for thousands of years. It shows the original height of the falls. Boats take you to the "Middle Rock". Steps lead up to the top of the rock, from which you can observe the natural spectacle from up close. |
Zurich City (webpage wiki / weather forecast) The city by the water combines urban living with nature. Zurich is abuzz with activity day and night with its countless events, many museums and diverse gastronomic scene, as well as Switzerland's most vibrant nightlife. Zurich's old town impresses with its historic buildings, picturesque alleyways and, of course, Zurich's landmark, the Grossmünster church. The view from the Karlsturm tower is simply breathtaking! The Grossmünster is just a stone's throw from the Fraumünster church with its world-famous Chagall windows. No sightseeing tour of Zurich would be complete without a visit to Bahnhofstrasse. This is one of the most famous shopping streets in the world. On Bahnhofstrasse, you'll find luxury labels, as well as young brands, and traditional boutiques and the Swiss classic: the Luxemburgerli macaroons at Confiserie Sprüngli. In a 2009 survey by CityMayors.com, Zurich was ranked 9th among the "World's 10 Most Powerful Cities". In the 2017 Global Financial Centres Index, Zurich was ranked as having the 11th most competitive financial centre in the world, and second most competitive in Europe after London. The Greater Zurich Area is Switzerland's economic and financial centre. Zurich is home to many international companies and Switzerland's largest financial institutions. |
